True Preparedness Demands Effort

Those Who Work Hard Survive, Those Who Depend Upon Others Suffer

Even the most cursory assessment of those who are striving to be truly prepared yields a clear common denominator among them. Those who are prepared are willing and driven to work, work hard, relentlessly, and without coercion. They know, either inherently, or by experience that only those who “do things” will survive. The lazy, the greedy, the sycophants will inevitably perish.

Your true level of preparedness is much less dependent upon your financial abilities and the “toys” that you have as it the amount of effort that you wish to dedicate. If you are lazy, you will fail to survive. If you are too embarrassed to build kits, develop skills, and practice you are wasting your time. If you afraid to be ridiculed when you pack your survival gear to take with you, then stop now, this is not for you.

Survival Voyeurs are titillated by watching shows depicting survival activities but do nothing for themselves. Preppers watch shows, talk to others who claim skill, buy stuff they are told or fear mongered into getting. The things go into the closet, tubs in the basement, or in the garage. On occasion preppers may play out scenarios or tryout skills with others who are on the cursory fringes. Bushcrafters study and practice “old school skills.” Those skills vary from primitive fire, cordage, and shelter making to hunting and trapping. They develop useful skills if you were to be lost in the wilderness without the advantage of modern tools. The most dedicated of bushcrafters prefer to emulate native American Indian skillsets shunning modern aids. Survivalists run the gambit from runner gunners and bunkers and bullets, to a melding of bushcrafting with modern advantages such as guns, ferocium rods, etc. A Prepared Practitioner© is a fusion of all the others. Respecting time tested skills and knowledge, applying every tool available to speed and refine positive outcomes, the Prepared Practitioner© will exploit anything at hand to survive, and thrive. Active and Prepared Practitioner© demand dedicated, drive and determination, they are not couch potato sports. The rewards are tremendous. The lessons and skills learned positively effect everything that you do.

People living in Western cultures of the 22^nd century are the heirs of an easy life. The generations preceding them left a legacy that allows people to “relax,” to spend time on more lofty pursuits than raw survival, allowing them to be soft. Even the poorest of people in first world nations enjoy more and do less than any generation before them, even in civilized nations. It is a double-edged sword. The positive effect is an ability for those of higher intellect to excel to new heights creating technology and broadening the understanding of the world around us. Those advances make everyone’s life better, from the strongest to the weakest, the smartest to the most challenged, everyone benefits. There are negative effects too. People become more sedentary, they lose the drive to work, they are lulled into dependency. The extra time they have allows them to be self-centered, take on trivial pursuits, and reduce their positive contributions to society. As the old saying goes, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop.”

Today we are able to focus on science and the arts, entertainment and leisure. Previous generations, like those in today’s 2^nd and 3^rd world nations are busy toiling at attaining sustenance such as food, water, shelter, etc. There are even some places in 1^st world nations, shunned and ignored by “modern culture”, where people struggle through a hard scrapple life, in the shadows.

Living a happy, healthy, fulfilling life is a result of a complex set of behaviors that span a lifetime, not something that you bought, a class that you attended, or others did for you. Your survival is dependent upon you, your effort, the breadth of your base knowledge, and your drive to survive are the key. The challenge is that the drive required to survive stands in conflict to the lifestyle and trappings of a successful 1^st world nation’s people.

Survival, Altruism, and Self Interest

Your survival, the survival of your family, friends and nation depend upon you having self-interest and the desire to protect what is worthy. You must care for yourself in order to protect others. Self-preservation is at the core of survival. Embrace it, do not be ashamed to be willing to fight for your survival. Self-immolation is self-defeating and self-destructive. Such is the edict thrust upon all Westerners every day. Resist the siren’s call. Fight for your right to be you, to do well, to win, to be the best, never fear failure, but always demand excellence.

Political pundits and main stream media repeaters have been preaching to Westerners for over a century. They, along with their coconspirators in certain religions and schools, have brainwashed people to follow a toxic edict. Ironically, they are the least likely to adhere to that same edict.

The edict, constructed by design, to assure your failure is a paradox. Once you embark on its prescribed path, you will fail. It is truly evil. It will draw you deeper and deeper into self-destruction. Your failure will enslave you to those imposing the edict upon you. The edict mandates that you contribute to them. You “must contribute” to atone for your failure. Finally, the edict mandates that in response to your failure you must double down on the edict’s self-destructive acts. You desperately suffer in hope of proving your worthiness.

Fulfillment of the edict is impossible. It creates a conundrum of sorts. You must commit acts which violate the edict to be able to fulfill it. The edict implores you to act in a manner whereby you overlook natural instincts. It is necessary to protect yourself in order to survive. The edict demands that you place yourself at risk in order to help others. That act, you are “taught,” is selfless, and virtuous. The edict is based upon selflessness, personified in self-destruction being virtuous. Successful fulfillment of the edict demands your own destruction as the ultimate success. The edict is paradoxical, toxic.

The edict is unbridled altruism.

It is a traditional virtue in many cultures and a core aspect of various religious traditions and secular worldviews, though the concept of "others" toward whom concern should be directed can vary among cultures and religions.” - Ayn Rand

Altruism is the cornerstone of collectivism, communism, and socialism. They survive on the carcasses of those who were free, productive, and self-interested. Karl Marx was an advocate of selflessness. Others learned the usefulness of such a submissive position. They wanted to be the enforcers of such altruism. Marx said, "each according to his ability, each according to his need." Stalin applying that, starved 10 million to death in the Ukraine so that his people could have their land.

The Smithsonian historian Daniel Boorstin said,

"It is not skeptics or explorers but fanatics and ideologues who menace decency and progress. No agnostic ever burned anyone at the stake or tortured a pagan, a heretic, or an unbeliever." These people look at mankind as sick and in need of drastic, painful (bloody, if need be) surgery. Coming in a close second are the true-believing zealots acting decisively in the name of the “Good and the Just;” the Inquisitor, the Secret Police. Life is cruel, and they make it crueler.

Leftists have been endlessly indoctrinating the people of successful modern Western societies in the virtue of altruism. They use the media and academia to reinforce guilt and self-loathing, a purely first world ailment. Altruistic behaviors feed on such perspectives. The problem is that the left despises the free market, free thought, and self-determination. They wish to teardown the bastions of the free market. Altruism is the ultimate weapon. Each generation that lives under the edict of self-loathing and unbridled altruism will have less, be less successful, and ultimately enslaved by those who wish to control them.

The point is not to be completely selfish. Simply put, consider the rule they teach you on the airplane. When the air masks drop it means that the cabin has depressurized. That means the oxygen content of the cabin air is not sufficient to maintain life. As a result, they give you implicit instructions to put the mask on yourself prior to helping others. That includes your children. Why? The answer is as obvious as it is simple. If you pass out you will not be able to help them. Self-interest supports aid to those in need.

During his campaign and after his election, President Donald Trump, stressed a simple mandate; “America First.” Love him or hate him facts are facts, his job is to serve the interest of the USA. He went further, while addressing some of the most influential leaders of the world, first at the UN and later in Davos, he clarified his mandate. He said, “I am the President of the United States of America, not the world. My job is to promote and fight for the interests of the USA. You are the leaders of your countries. I expect that you will do the same. If you want to trade or deal with us, we will work for a fair and equitable deal for both of us.” America First remained his cornerstone.

There is something important to be learned from the aftermath of his assertion. The first to attack the President’s spoken intent to negotiate in deals favoring the interests of the USA was the US media. The media then paraded a litany of Leftist professors and pundits all condemning the idea of self-interest and US dominance all on the air and in print ad nauseum. Of course, several European, Asian, and Middle Eastern nations condemned the idea before a single deal was negotiated or even discussed. Our enemies inadvertently exposed themselves.

The USA has done many great things. We have broken and screwed up some too. Some of our politicians and our oligarchy have done worse. Ironically, the lion’s share of those lecturing US citizens of their duty to be altruistic are the same ones who have committed those acts for which we are bound to atone for. The Clintons mismanaged disaster funds funneled into their Foundation for Haiti. George H W Bush has been buying up the water rights in Paraguay to control industry and peace in the region. The CIA acting for several Presidents and administrations overthrew the leaders of countries, fomented war, assassinated people, and spied on industries for the interest of chosen companies in the USA. In balance, the USA has reaped very little benefit the for nation while altruistically bestowing over 70% of the world with the spoils of our success.

The oligarchy is a different story. They span continents and national lines. They are regularly, overtly and covertly, the spearhead of the toxic, self-loathing, guilt-tripping edict, of altruism thrust upon the citizens of free nations. While they lecture the common people in altruism they exploit those who are suffering. Then they dip into our pockets to invoke altruism to have you donate your money to the “cause.”

The USA holds no monopoly on overreach or self-interest. It is the push and pull of nation state survival. The fact is that if you compare the USA to the rest of the world we have only scraped the surface of self-interest. Nearly every nation around the world practices self-interest, it is survival. The media heralds the idea that that a nation that fights for deals in the best interest of its people and economy is simply self-destructive.

Helping others is humane and good for all. Never lose sight of the fact that the first person that you need to help is yourself. Self-reliance and independence requires that you take care of your needs. Once you are properly cared for by all means, feel free to help others within the length of your “cable tow”; within the scope of a person’s reasonable ability.

Your survival depends upon you taking care of you. Never be ashamed, never be embarrassed, you must be first if we are to survive. Rugged individualism, self-reliance, independent these are the virtues to live by. If we all did, there would be very few who would require an altruistic reprieve.

I love to teach and mentor. I have always been pretty good at it or so I am told by many who I have counseled and coached. I realized that I could use that skill and my vast and broad experience, knowledge and my network of well rounded and skilled cadre to help others, to make a difference. As I said previously; My life has been spent in a never ending quest for information and enlightenment. As an investigator, inventor, off road jeep adventurer, camper, hiker, climber, skier, and more I have always been a sponge. I have had the good fortune of meeting, knowing and even working with people from all over the world with unbelievable skills which they were happy to share with me.

The primary job of an investigator was to gather information, process it, formulate conclusions and determine how things happen based upon that information. As a formally trained interrogative interviewer I learned to gather information at high speed, vette it, log it, absorb it and go back for more. No one ever knows everything and as I have told my sons since they could talk; you should learn a new thing every day and you can learn something from everyone, no matter who they are, where they are from and their walk of life. Life is truly an adventure and being highly didactic I am never satisfied. Everyone brings something of value to the table if you are willing to learn.

The accident that has altered my life course will not stop me. It has caused both financial and physical trauma. It has also caused me to stop and contemplate my life. I have done so much, learned and gathered much, invented, built, taught, saved and much more. But as I perceive it had I died in the course of my ordeal after the accident it would have all been wasted; lost. Prior to the accident I had started fleshing out PracticeSurvival to help people understand the proper and safe way to enjoy outdoor adventuring. Since then it has become the conduit whereby I will leave, hopefully, something of positive value for others who appreciate the outdoors and the texture of life as I do. It is my humble attempt to do some good, not of Ego, PracticeSurvival.com is wrought from the sincere hope that the few gifts with which I was lucky enough to be endowed will in some way help others now and after I leave this mortal coil. Hopefully I will get to enjoy many more sunsets on the Shenandoah Mountains, either way I will do my best to help others enjoy it too while being safe and informed.

Survival Is Rarely Pretty or Peaceful – Ask Nicolo Machiavelli

Machiavelli realized that, when carefully studying history, the good guy almost always finishes last.

There is something to be said for the principle of fighting for your survival. Religious and political voices counsel us every day how to be submissive and, for the most part, docile. Most first-world societies have been brainwashed their people, push a relentless torrent mandating acts of altruism, self-loathing, and guilt. The overlords have “bred” Aggression out of us. Such social engineering has been used throughout man’s history under the guise of civility and peace. The goal, of course, is to assure the dominance of a government or group over others.

If you think that you understand strategic social interactions, politics, or survival, then you better know Machiavelli.

The first thing that every survival minded person must do is learn how to override that training. If you genuinely wish to survive any significant conflict or social upheaval, then you need to understand Machiavelli's principles. A Nicolo Machiavelli primer is provided below, along with his two seminal works.

Executive Summary:

Anyone who wishes to protect their nation, way of life, liberty, and freedom should acquaint themselves with the Machiavellian principles. I suggest that you begin with “The Prince.” (see the PDF below)

His principles (in the supporting materials below) will offend the sensibilities of some who are highly religious. I recommend that you force yourself past it. The perceptions and well-rooted historical basis upon which they were formed are easily validated by millennia.

Machiavelli served as a diplomat in Italy's Florentine Republic for fourteen years. Upon the return of the exiled Medic family and the fall of the Republic, Machiavelli studied Roman history. Licking his wounds at the collapse of the Republic, he wrote his most notable treatise, The Prince. In the Prince, he outlined the harsh realities of what it requires to maintain and assure the longevity of a monarchy or a government.

Machiavelli is known as the "Father of Modern Political Theory". The Prince illuminated the necessity of ruling by deceit, fear, and in some cases, force. Pope Clement VIII condemned the premise. Interestingly, the Catholic Church had been practicing nearly identical methods to protect, grow, and maintain their control over their nation-state colonies around the world, all done for the “greater good” (God’s will).

Reactive behaviors are dangerous. Proactive actions are strong. Proactive actions are the essence of planning, analytical analysis, and review of historical data. Proactive actions are based upon careful deliberations and well-designed preparations and procedures. Reactive actions are spur of the moment. By their nature, they lack clarity of thought, lack deliberation, and are fraught with shortsighted reasoning. We should take a quick look at this issue and how we see its results intentionally thrust upon us in the real world.

Benjamin Franklin’s quote, widely butchered and amended, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety”, would seem to be more appropriate to this topic than most would realize. That quote is commonly applied to arguments regarding the surveillance state and excessive governance/protection. In fact, most people are not aware that Franklin was referring to monetary seizures through taxation. Of course, taxation is an affront to freedom, and threatens liberty if you fail to comply. The government creates or exploits a problem then attributes blame to others.

Reality TV Survival Shows Entertain

But Offer Little Real Survival Knowledge

I had the opportunity to spend a rare moment on a nice August day, due to some health issues, I had the opportunity to sit, have coffee and converse about all things survival, prepper and people in general. What a great day. My rare day of socialization allowed me to bounce a few ideas off of my friends and see which things that they liked. We sat, enjoyed some good local java, swapped some amazing stories, refreshed old memories, brain stormed some new ideas and hopefully set in motion some new opportunities. Some of the new opportunities include adding a skilled ground water treatment specialist to the ranks at PracticeSurvival.com.

The theme of our conversation meandered a bit, but gradually a common theme began to emerge; People and their survival and prepping plans are similar to a hungry person at a buffet; they load their plate with lots of food but end up only eating a small amount. Similarly, most preppers watch entertaining shows about survival in the wild like Bear Grylls, Dual Survival, Man, Woman vs. Wild and Survivorman. They are great shows, and the hosts have lots of wilderness experience and have varying levels of skills. Unfortunately most of the viewers do not share those skills often not having any skills all, nor do they have the physical conditioning, endurance or experience that the hosts demonstrate. After watching these shows the viewers are pumped up. They believe that they can do the trek in the wilderness. BUT!! Most of them have been so long without riding a bike, taking a hike period it could literally kill them. If you were to give them a pack fully outfitted to live off of the land they would have a stroke in minutes. They get winded climbing the stairs. The viewers head off to buy all of this great gear, but they really don’t know what to do with it and it is unlikely that they will ever make it far enough to figure it out.

Let’s get real! Real survival and self reliance requires endurance, it also requires hands on practice. Without both of those factors the likelihood of success is greatly diminish. Forget TEOTWAWKI.

Every day somewhere in the world TSHTF but the problem is it never reaches the point of TEOTWAWKI. The alternative is way worse; civil unrest, a breakdown of services, shortages of main staples but government is still in place. The worst thing is that you are between a rock and a hard place. Anyone who has served or worked in theater anywhere around the world has had a taste of it. Even when the worst case scenario is at hand the government is still trying to enforce and impose itself upon its citizenry, for better or worse. Nothing in life is simple. So goes the problem of chaos and disorder in a first or second world country. Problems are localized, they are not nationwide (even when they are they are viewed in a compartmentalized way). This is the most complicated scenario for a survival minded person or group. A band of thugs attacks you for your supplies, you shoot them. Dead bodies tend to get the attention of even an overtaxed law enforcement group. Now you end up in jail until they sort things out. Maybe they charge you with murder. Your family, already threatened by the shortages, lack of services and staples, now is without their point person; leader. You are in bigger trouble than the disaster that you started with.

Every prepper and survivalist should know and understand this word – paradox; a paradox is a situation that appears to contradict itself but in fact is quite possible. If you really want to consider yourself prepared to protect your family, yourself and possibly your close circle then heed this warning and educate yourself as much as possible in this complex paradox of threats. Ask yourself this; if there was no power, no natural gas, no water, the sewer system backed up, no food in the grocery stores and the authorities were so overwhelmed that they can’t even begin to take care of the big things. It won’t take long until people begin to loot; roam the streets ransacking homes for food, water and other staples. Here is the paradox, now they come to take your food, your water, your home, etc. You have spent years preparing for TEOTWAWKI. Your preparations were based on a complete breakdown of society; “every man for himself”. But, BUT!!! That is not what you are presented with. Even in Syria and Lebanon at the height of conflict, people “defended themselves” under duress when no one came to help, but after order was restored, those who fought to protect themselves and loved ones were rounded up and jailed for “over reacting” or using “excessive force”. These are charges that are wielded at our police and military everyday when faced with extreme situations, which are forced to fight for their lives, fight to protect others and then after the dust settles have some government officials or lawyers in the calm comfort of their homes take weeks to second guess a decision they are forced to make in 15 seconds. They end up in jail!!! The alternative is that they fear such reprisal so they hesitate and are either killed or injured. A paradox, this is our world.

Mexico is a very close and unfortunate example of this paradox. The Drug Cartels wreak havoc, ignore the government’s authority, kill, bomb, shoot and more with basic impunity. Meanwhile, the Police write traffic tickets, fine people for public drunkenness and enforce basic laws. I have had more than one discussion with Mexican Nationals who tell me horror stories of having to hack their way out of gangs of Cartel thugs with machete to escape an unknown fate and then having to go on the run to escape the police pursuing them for it. Where is the line? How do you know what to do and what not to? The US Military and Police Departments grapple with these questions everyday and are vilified for their decisions to defend not fade against such attacks. We hold funerals for the fallen Military and Police, while people picket outside the cemetery, and the killers are heralded as victims or heroes! TEOTWAWKI would be easy, kill or be killed, good vs. evil. As I have said in thousands of interrogational interviews, there is no black and white (bad Bart in the Black Hat, Red Ryder in the White Hat) there is only a thin line of each with a whole lot of grey in between. That grey area can cost you your freedom, maybe even your life.

If you have a friend who is a lawyer or better yet a district attorney or prosecutor, take them to dinner, ask them to define what you can or cannot do in situations such as I have described above. Ask him how many days you would spend in jail for a “justifiable homicide” / “righteous shooting”.

Let’s take this one step further; in my town there have been a rash of box cutter/knife point robberies some in broad daylight in a small town of 10K. Your are approached by an unknown person, feigning car troubles, badgering you for assistance, you courteously offer to call for help and attempt to leave. He follows and as you go to enter your vehicle he holds a knife to your throat. He takes your purse and threats bodily harm. So far they have not cut anyone, but it is just a matter of time. This is a serious crime, armed robbery. But, let’s play this out for a moment. I have been in these situations before, no problem, he holds the knife on me, I take his life, two moves, and he lies bleeding on the ground or with a crushed windpipe. I call the Police, they come, they “take me into custody”, and they take him to the hospital. His girlfriend (accomplice) tells the police that I attacked him. Now I have problems. My life is over even though I did nothing wrong. Are there alternatives? What are they? What are your legal rights? How can you defend yourself? How can you defend against being punished for protecting yourself?

You must educate yourself; you must plan, practice your reactions and your plot your course. All of the time and money that you spend on prepping and stockpiling will be nullified; negated. Question, learn, and plan, continuously expand your sphere of knowledge and circle of allies. Always remember there is no catastrophe when you are prepared. There are no easy answers, but your survival depends upon having the correct educated actions.

One final point: The paradox outlined above and its associated threats to you and those you care about is why hunkering down is not a good scenario. In fact it is a no win scenario. I know that the idea of marauders ransacking your home is infuriating. But your survival and that of your family and close circle far exceeds that of any property that you own. You have insurance. You need to relocate away from the trouble until things return to normal. Watch for Part Two of this article “Run Away to Fight Another Day”.

I hate to repeat myself but I must, sorry.

Today I found out that a very close friend and adventure buddy is being treated for a tick bite. I am disappointed that he never had the discussion with me or read the pages on this site about ticks and what to do. He is extremely intelligent and an expert in the wilderness not to mention many other areas. But a simple tick could be a game changer.

A clear message about preparedness and being forearmed with knowledge is obvious. But to me the story is another one. Survival, no matter how you define that is not an individual “sport”. It requires a team .. or at least two. Now, anyone who knows me would use the word loner in the top ten to describe me, even though my clients and acquaintances think that I am very social. I am not antisocial I just tend to be a super type A individualist. So where does that have anything to do with my friend’s tick dilemma? Well, that is simple. If he had a close buddy they would have checked each other every few hours or at least at the end of the trek each day for ticks. If one was found a simple act with the Pro-Tick Remedy tool would have reliably removed it prior to it being “set” and nearly eliminating the threat of disease.

It is not unusual that we tend to strive for the peaceful alone time in the wilderness or where ever we decide to find some peace. Unfortunately, most of us tend to be very self sufficient and rarely if ever ask for help. When it comes to survival, especially in the outdoors you need a partner, period. Yes you can survive, yes you are tough and knowledgeable but, you can not check your head or back for ticks. You cannot remove one if you have one. I remember one time in a certain Central American country when trekking through the dense forest on a protection job I felt something weird but I could not see… I even tried scratching it off on a tree.. one of my team looked and I had a big fat leach!!! He scraped it off with a knife. I bled for hours. If it had stayed on I would have been in big trouble. Check back I am adding leaches to the Predators Parasite section.

So before you go out the next time take a little time to protect yourself. Whether it is in the parking lot (as I wrote about in the parking lot survival article) or in the wilderness prepare, be alert and have a buddy to back you up. Check yourself every time that you go out, this is a bad year for ticks and more because of the warm winter.
