Remembering 9/11

As another anniversary passes, of the first terror attacks on the continental US that the media and government could not deny or write off as “a group of crazy people acting alone without affiliation to a nation or state”. It is important to remember those who needlessly died in the attack and put it in some perspective.

I was there right within throwing distance of the towers when the first plane hit. I worked in the financial district as a security expert helping clients protect their people and businesses over the next 120 days. It was heart wrenching, emotional, exhausting, and amazing.

9/11 was a real life example of my last article (Click Here to Read It) about TSHTF and TEOTWAWKI. All hell broke loose; no matter how hard they tried the law enforcement personnel were helpless in the situation. They could barely control their own emotions as the most horrific scene that human could ever imagine played out in front of them. The story though, I believe that never gets enough attention was how, NYC; the home of (at the time) some of the most rude, careless, self-absorbed people suddenly, miraculously came together as one, one people, one nation. It was so moving it brought tears to me, the stone cold investigator. It was breathtaking; people helping people, no race, no religion, no stigmas, no prejudices, just Americans helping Americans.

Having investigated people involved in executive attacks, kidnappings, truck hijackings, and domestic terrorists, I was struck by another point that to me and many of my close circle seemed very obvious but rarely mentioned; the people who attacked us did not understand what made the USA so great. They completely miscalculated our response and I believe they were duped by the media’s portrayal of President Bush and Clinton. They believed that we were a paper tiger. They noted our lack of forceful response to the attacks in Beirut, the USS Cole, the first attack on the World Trade Center Towers in 1993 and believed that George Bush was weak and like Clinton before he would bite his lip and tell the world that the US Government would “bring the people responsible to justice”, and then nothing would happen. Instead we took the fight to them. The terrorists believed to be funded and choreographed by a man connected to the worst terror attack in the history of the world prior to 9/11 in the financial district in 1993 in India and again later in 2006 and 2008. He is still at large. They believed (erroneously) that like in Mumbai they would incite riots and cause civil unrest and irreparable damage to the US economy. THEY WERE WRONG.

For all of our flaws and daily cacophonous rhetoric in the media, most people in the USA are worried about surviving day to day, increasing possessions and mundane interests. Most Americans have a much more accepting and broad minded interaction with people from every culture and race. It is all around us every day. Sure some people are ignorant or scared by those they don’t understand, but compared to most countries that I have ever spent time in (103) we are very well integrated. We value individual life more than anywhere that I have ever been. Whatever political crap they tell on the 24/7 news channels is not reality compared to the way people here are treated versus anywhere else. That was the terrorist’s mistake. Like in a family where the members fight and squabble but close ranks when one is attacked from outside, I saw it happen in seconds in NYC that day. The whole experience will never leave me for the rest of my life; people helping people, caring, touching, amazing.

They killed nearly 4000 people of every race, creed and color. It was a horrible loss to the USA and tore at the heart and mind of every American. It cost the USA economy (by many estimates) 90 billion dollars a day, brought air, rail and sea transportation to halt for over 15 days. But they cannot kill the spirit of the people of the USA.
